With the WhisperRing, we can accelerate the energy transition. In particular, make it cheaper, but also generate more support. This is because the turbine is much quieter, the turbine has sufficient yields even smaller and can be mass produced. This by standardizing the production process of Carbon reinforced Fibres.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These days you pay about thirty to forty cents per kilowatt hour. We can do this for as little as four cents per kilowatt hour. That substantially lower price allows us to definitively compete fossil fuels out of the market.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>What are the two main benefits of the WhisperRing?<\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;There are two very important interesting aspects to the WhisperRing that have huge benefits. First, the blades sit on a ring with a large hole in the middle. Just air and wind can pass through that hole. And the second important aspect is that it is built of carbon. So it is many times lighter than a conventional turbine.<\/p>\n<p>Because of these two aspects, the blades do not need to turn as fast. No gearbox is needed, thus saving maintenance costs. <strong>In addition, because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wind-energy-the-facts.org\/wake-effect.html#:~:text=The%20wake%20effect%20is%20the,the%20turbines%20on%20each%20other.\">wake\/zog effect<\/a>, you can put the turbines close together.<\/strong> So on the same surface area you can produce more energy. The carbon process is something that can be mass-produced. Because we use a ring, it is possible to use a generator that is switchable. This allows you to maximize production at both low and high wind speeds.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Our technology can generate cost-effective energy output even at lower altitudes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The turbines are distributed throughout the Netherlands, particularly along highways, dike bodies and on industrial sites. The smaller types can be placed with farmers, among others. Eventually, we will also move toward larger turbines. But our technology can generate cost-effective energy output even at lower altitudes. There is much less nuisance from the turbine than from normal wind turbines. For both humans and animals. In the future, the WhisperRing will also be able to be placed offshore.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Because of the ring structure, the turbine has a lower rotational speed which benefits; lower noise production, less cast shadow but also less bird and bat mortality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>What else is needed to actually make the WhisperRing a reality?<\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;The concept of the WhisperRing is being validated at TU Delft but we are not there yet. Right now, capital is needed. In addition, suitable engineers are needed for detail engineering, prototyping and testing. For this, we are looking for a total of about four million euros.<\/p>\n<p>The WhisperRing seems futuristic, but certainly not unrealistic.&#8221; Eric fully believes in it. &#8220;This could be a disruptive technology that pushes all other technology out of the market. A major revolution within the energy industry. The inspiration now needs to be conveyed to the wider public. People need to get engaged with the WhisperRing. Value-added investors are being sought. They can expect their investment to be worth substantially more.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, I see the WhiserRing getting bigger and bigger. Literally and figuratively. The goal is to make all of the Netherlands more sustainable. A surplus must also be created, as the demand for electricity will increase sharply in the coming years. Eventually, we also want to produce hydrogen. So that aviation, shipping and heavy industry can be made sustainable. Surely the Netherlands is again at the forefront of such developments. Now it must actually be built. In a number of steps, we want to do that development. And eventually, of course, we want to develop the business with isolated power of five hundred kilowatts, two megawatts or maybe much more. To get there, we really need to overcome some technical challenges.<\/p>\n<p>First, a prototype will be developed. In this, we are going to show that everything we say is <em>possible<\/em> is really so. With these smaller prototypes, we can experiment in a wind tunnel. There are some things we really want to prove.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest challenge is the bearing. Where &#8220;normal&#8221; wind turbines have the bearing in the middle there the bearing of the WhisperRing has a large annular bearing. With that comes a number of challenges. That turbine is in the wild, the wind is not constant, it is spinning. That bearing should be able to accommodate all that. And that&#8217;s coupled right to the generator. All of that must be done precisely. I am convinced it will work, you just have to prove it.<\/p>\n<p>The main path is bearing and generator development. These will also be on the test bench after only a year. We want to have the whole prototype running in a meadow within two years. It is an extraordinarily elegant design. The fact that you can manipulate the wake through the hole in the middle so you don&#8217;t lose production is unique. Indeed, we can make sure that it generates a higher production than other wind turbines, which of course is wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>When the testing in those wind tunnels is done. Is it time for the real thing. If you want to field something, you really need to get here early. Finding a good test site, is not without its challenges. When that turbine finally stands, the first thing you want to know is what wind speed the mill is experiencing and what it is producing. Then you&#8217;re going to see if that matches the design.<\/p>\n<p>Once that is all developed and tested, then you get to the stage where it can become operational. After developing our first turbine, with a rotor diameter of 8.5 meters that we then put on a mast of 15 to 20 meters, we can eventually move toward series production.<\/p>\n<p>So we try to keep moving forward and have a newer version ready every year. Only if you get rid of that axis can you make a turbine that is more efficient than what we know. Now what makes the WhisperRing so special is that the normal hub has been replaced by a huge ring. An axis-less mill, in other words.<\/p>\n<p>Normal wind turbines are aimed in the direction of the wind. You have to be very careful that that tip speed of the blades does not become too great. Otherwise, it is going to produce too much noise and wear out faster. If the turbine is made bigger, you have to make sure that that whole rotor will spin slower.<\/p>\n<p>The gearbox of conventional turbines is very prone to failure. If you take it away, there should be another generator. This is what many manufacturers are doing now. They are trying to make as big a turbine as possible. But there is a limit to this. At some point, that generator catches so much wind that the windmill may fall over.<\/p>\n<p>So unless you make a hole in that hub. That is the secret of the WhisperRing turbine. In that ring instead of a dense hub, you can make a fairly large generator. You then get a lot more freedoms to go and make that generator cheap. The benefits are many.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is there, it&#8217;s validated, it works, but you have to have the right materials. A bearing must be constructed. And there are certainly some technical challenges to this. However, this concept has many more advantages than disadvantages. The bottom line is that this turbine is going to produce more energy, at a lower production cost. It is a wonderful solution, both small and large. We are moving more and more toward decentralized generation. So we will have to distribute further and further into local grids. The WhisperRing is an excellent fit for this.<\/p>\n<p>I am confident that it will all work out. I know it&#8217;s going to be fine. Challenges do exist and sufficient capital is still lacking to move forward. In the development process, things have to be tried out and things sometimes go wrong, which then have to be improved. And that requires money.<\/p>\n<p>After the testing phase, you get the production process. The production process of these mills requires less labor, is produced in an easy way and the cost of materials is low. So no expensive process.<\/p>\n<p>Carbon is used. This is applied in 3D printers. This makes for a tremendously low error rate and <em>low<\/em> use of personnel. Because the mills are so light, it is also more transportable. The biggest similarity is that they both cannot drive production. You don&#8217;t have complete control over when it is produced. In the beginning, both solar and wind power were very expensive to produce. A situation that is currently changing in the market.<\/p>\n<p>The cost of solar and wind energy will be so low that it will be cheaper than fossil. In addition, we are also better able to store energy and use it at other times. These two important developments will allow us to increasingly meet our total energy demand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>What is the investment for a landowner?<\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;We are now looking for landowners. There are several options. An investment in the WhisperRing will be between 50 and 55 thousand for them. Furthermore, of course, the spot depends on the wind situation. Each mill has a particular power curve. Based on this, the expected production can be calculated. The base cost for wholesale consumers and producers is around two hundred euros per megawatt hour. On top of that come all kinds of costs. Right now we see energy prices of up to four hundred euros in the market. That leaves the question of how much a landowner consumes himself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h4>What does the revenue model look like?<\/h4>\n<p>&#8220;So ultimately the revenue model on the one hand is <em>determined <\/em>by the production which in turn is determined by the power curve, the wind area and the height of the turbine. On the other hand, by the consumption profile of the landowner himself. You can run various mathematical models that allow you to figure out approximately in which you can recoup a particular investment.<\/p>\n<p>We work with reservation agreements. This actually settles a mutual optionality. When the turbine is produced, we reserve a piece of land. In return, the landowner is given an option to take the turbine from us to be able to net it themselves. What is the big advantage for the landowner is that they reserve a production slot. You know that as soon as you enter into the land reservation, there will be a turbine in the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>If we look at all parties with recent contracts, you&#8217;re sitting with a payback period of well under five years. Beyond that, of course, you still depend on the world situation. But no one has a grip on that. We start with a small design of eight and a half meters. Then we can at least demonstrate that it is already delivering good returns on that scale. Eventually as this grows larger, the energy yield will increase substantially. In addition, material costs will not grow by that same factor. So the bigger, the cheaper and the more yield.<\/p>\n<h4>Is the WhisperRing the answer to enable the transition to fully renewable energy?<\/h4>\n<p>The demand for electricity will grow rapidly in the coming years. Everything becomes electric. Big steps need to be taken there. And with WhisperRing technology, you can. The moment development and testing are accomplished, we are going to be able to put down the first factories. Then the turbines can be produced on the assembly line. We can make a huge volume.<\/p>\n<p>Internationally, there are certainly opportunities in the future. Especially because of the different types of turbines we offer.
